Viewing the world from the silent cockpit of a glider is a magical experience. It's much more challenging than powered flight, but it's also great fun. You need a lot of skill to keep a glider airborne - knowing how to recognise lift, where to find it and how to use it.
But the risks that pilots take are prepared for and allowed for in advance, limiting what risks there are. This is why we feel that glider pilots should get a fairer deal from their insurers for their sport.
Gliding as a sport is increasing in popularity as are glider competitons. Gliding clubs and gliding associations are springing up and developing under the guidance of The British Gliding Association (BGA).
Historically, the cost of Glider insurance was determined by the perceived risk. Like all flying it was considered to be relatively high risk - so either premiums were loaded or cover was limited to Third Party only. Onrisk staff have flown in gliders and we believe that glider pilots are professional and cautious and the risks are lower than perceived. That is why Onrisk have sourced their own insurance provider to try and give glider pilots a fairer deal.
Gliding (Sailplane) Insurance - what does it cover?
Onrisk Glider (Sailplane) Hull & Liability insurance covers legal liability for damages and legal costs arising out of third party loss, injury, or damage in connection with flying gliders. Unlike many policies the cover can also apply whilst you are taking part in organised glider events and glider competitions. The premiums payable for Onrisk liability insurance are minimal compared to the damages that could be awarded as part of a liability settlement. Club and Group Glider insurance is also available on request.
